Mishka Willis • Relational Neuroscience Based Parent Coaching -

Coaching structure:

  • Typically our relationship begins with a consultation call to explore coaching and ensure we are a good fit for each other. If we agree it’s a fit, then we will decide which program sounds right, and set up your membership, including scheduling your first month’s program.

  • Next, I’ll send an intake form prior to the first session, which you can begin filling out, as you have time. It is helpful if each parent or primary caregiver is able to contribute.

  • Next we have an initial session in which we discuss the intake form, identify current needs and begin to develop a strategy and plan. This may be refined and adjusted within the first few sessions and further as we work together.

  • Coaching memberships vary in number of private or group sessions per month, but they do have in common that generally we stay consistent in order to have the structure and cadence of the program contribute to the integration of the material and to offer the support to sink into the material and give it the time and attention to develop these neural pathways. It took us a long time to develop in the ways we have, and it does take time to rewire and learn new patterns and new ways of being.

  • I am always grateful to receive any information between sessions to help inform our work in session. Because this is so helpful and often moves the progress forward so much, I do not charge for reading time, within reason. Some clients may like to send a daily journal of how things are going, or synopsize the week and send this the day before session. Everyone’s process is unique, and honored, and I am happy to be able to offer time spent reading with no charge.

Important policies and things to know:

  • Sessions are 45 minutes in length and held via Zoom video conferencing, or by phone.

  • Coaching works best when parents/caregivers are in a place with fewer distractions, and are able to take notes. I understand this can be challenging with kids around, but I ask you to try your best, to help you get the most benefit from your sessions.

  • Driving a vehicle during session is not allowed, and if this happens, we will need to end the session until we can safely reconvene. I just want to be sure everyone is safe.

  • I request that we do not discuss children in their presence, and if a child interrupts the session, or a parent needs to tend to them, it is totally fine to stop for a few minutes (keepthe phone line or zoom connection open), and meet their needs and then resume the session.

  • Sessions begin on time. Late arrivals will shorten the session without reimbursement—even if previously, sessions have been generously extended after a late arrival without penalty. Similarly, interruptions to the session will shorten them without reimbursement.

  • Your sessions are scheduled at a dedicated time, and we want to commit and prioritize this as much as is possible. Due to this, the session time is your time and I will be working on your coaching, even in your absence during your time.

  • Cancellations: If for some reason you or I need to cancel due to a true emergency (due to child illness, or my/your own illness, or other emergency,), we will either reschedule your session or tack on an additional session to the end of your program. Otherwise I do not reschedule missed sessions, however if it is possible to meet at another time, even briefly for a shorter session, this can sometimes be possible, but is not guaranteed.

  • Emergency sessions: Additionally, if for some reason, there is a need for an additional emergency session, we can schedule those at the normal session rate, when there is time.

  • Sessions will remain confidential, and you will be treated with compassion and respect always.

  • While confidentially is always protected to the best of my ability, it is impossible to protect the confidentiality of information transmitted electronically. This is particularly true of email and information stored on computers connected to the internet, which do not utilize encryption and other forms of security. I will protect your information to the best of my ability, understanding that email can be at risk.

  • I may at times, with your permission, consult with other professionals regarding your case. During these consultations, your identity is protected.

  • Parent coaching has a similar structure to therapy, but it is not a replacement for therapy or mental health counseling. Coaching is generally a here and now, and future focused collaboration, though at times, we may discuss the past, or issues which may have happened in the past that might be affecting the present. Often this is in the framework of learning to identify triggers that challenge our ability to remain grounded and calm and feeling emotionally safe. I may offer strategies to assist with managing these triggers or other things which may come up in the process of coaching. This will always be in the context of helping the family connect and build emotional safety within and between each member of the family.
